You have planned your rhinoplasty, arranged time away from work, and pictured how your new nose might look. Then the practical question arrives: what will recovery actually be like? Healing does not happen all at once, and your nose may look swollen before its refined shape emerges. Knowing what is normal can make the process feel much less stressful.

At the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads, our board-certified plastic surgeons guide patients in Newport News and Williamsburg through every stage of recovery. In this article, we describe what you can expect during rhinoplasty recovery from one week to the next.

The first few days

During the first 48 hours after your rhinoplasty, your main job is to simply rest. You will probably have a small splint over your nose, along with swelling, stuffiness, tenderness, and bruising around your eyes. Minor drainage may also occur. It can feel a little like having a very congested nose, even though the procedure was performed on the outside as well as the inside.

Sleep with your head elevated, take medications as directed, and use cold compresses only if your surgeon recommends them. You will need someone to drive you home and ideally stay with you during the earliest part of recovery.

Week one

Swelling and bruising may become more noticeable before they begin improving. That can be surprising, but it is usually part of the normal healing process. Avoid blowing your nose, bending over, lifting heavy objects, or doing anything that raises pressure in your face.

Your surgeon will tell you how to clean around the nostrils and care for any external incision. The splint and external sutures, if present, are commonly removed at a follow-up appointment around the end of the first week. Your nose will not look finished when the splint comes off, so try not to judge the result yet.

Week two

By the second week, bruising and obvious swelling often improve enough that many people feel comfortable returning to work, school, or social plans. You may still notice puffiness, congestion, tenderness, or temporary numbness.

Light daily activity is usually fine once your surgeon clears it, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting remain off-limits. Be careful around children, pets, crowded spaces, and anything else that could accidentally bump your nose.

Weeks three and four

During weeks three and four, your nose should begin looking more natural as swelling continues to settle. Most visible bruising has typically faded, although the tip may still appear rounder or feel firmer than expected.

You may gradually resume more of your usual routine with your surgeon’s approval. Continue avoiding contact sports and activities that could injure your nose. If you wear glasses, ask when and how you can safely rest them on the bridge.

Months two and three

Most people look socially healed by this point, but your nose is still changing beneath the surface. The bridge may appear increasingly defined while the tip continues to hold some swelling. Breathing generally becomes easier as internal swelling decreases, although the timeline varies if your surgery included functional corrections.

Protect your nose from sun exposure because healing skin can be more sensitive. Use sunscreen and wear a hat when spending time outside in Hampton Roads.

Months four through twelve

Small amounts of swelling, particularly around the nasal tip, may take up to a year or longer to resolve. Thicker skin and revision procedures can require additional time. The changes during these later months may be subtle from day to day.

Looking at periodic photographs rather than checking the mirror constantly can make your progress easier to appreciate.
