Reduce Overly Large Breasts

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure that reduces the size and weight of excessively large breasts. Many individuals with disproportionately large breasts may experience physical discomfort, such as neck and back pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, and skin irritation. Additionally, the weight of large breasts can impact your posture and overall quality of life. Breast reduction alleviates these issues and improves your comfort and confidence.

During a breast reduction, excess breast tissue and skin are removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped to create a more proportionate and balanced breast size. The nipple and areola may also be repositioned for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. This surgery enhances comfort by creating breasts that better fit your body’s natural contours. If you’ve been struggling with the physical and emotional challenges of overly large breasts, talk to us about your breast reduction options.

Breast Reduction Treats:

  • Excessively large breasts that cause physical discomfort
  • Chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain
  • Skin irritation and rashes beneath the breast crease
  • Shoulder grooving from bra straps
  • Postural problems and discomfort during physical activities
  • Disproportionate breast size in relation to the body

Am I a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

If you’ve been struggling with the physical and emotional burdens of overly large breasts, breast reduction may be ideal for you. The most suitable candidates for breast reduction are typically individuals in good general health who are experiencing physical discomfort, such as neck and back pain, as a result of excessively large breasts. Additionally, if you’ve had difficulty finding properly fitting clothing and bras or feel self-conscious about your breast size, you may benefit from this procedure.

During a consultation at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads, our board-certified plastic surgeons will assess your unique concerns, review your medical history, and discuss your desired outcomes to determine if breast reduction is right for you. Schedule a consultation with our team to explore the possibilities of breast reduction and how it can positively impact your life.

Breast Reduction Surgery in Hampton Roads

During your breast reduction surgery at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads, you’ll be under the care of our board-certified plastic surgeons. The surgery typically begins with the administration of anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the process. You and your surgeon will have discussed the type of incisions needed for your specific case, which can vary based on your concerns and goals.

The most common incision for breast reduction is the anchor incision — also known as an inverted T incision — which encircles the areola, extends vertically down to the breast crease, and follows the natural curve of the crease. Another option is the lollipop incision, which consists of a circular incision around the areola and a vertical incision down to the breast fold. Finally, in cases necessitating minimal excision, a vertical incision may be used for minimal scarring.

Once the incisions are made, your surgeon will remove excess breast tissue and reshape the remaining tissue to achieve a more proportionate and balanced breast size. The incisions are closed with sutures, and you will be monitored as you awaken from anesthesia. Following your surgery, you can expect some initial swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. Over time, you will notice a significant improvement as your breasts become more proportionate to your natural contours.

Breast Reduction Recovery Guidelines:

  • Allow your body time to heal by getting adequate rest in the initial days post-surgery.
  • Take prescribed pain medication and antibiotics as directed by your surgeon.
  • Use post-operative surgical bras or compression garments for the recommended duration.
  • Refrain from strenuous activities and heavy lifting during the early recovery period.
  • Follow proper wound care and hygiene instructions to minimize infection risks.
  • Be vigilant for any unusual swelling, redness, or signs of infection.
  • Shield incisions from direct sunlight to minimize scarring and ensure proper healing.
  • Don’t hesitate to reach out to your surgeon if you have concerns or questions.
