Stress, genetics, aging, and sun exposure can do a number of our skin health. Adults who are struggling with the signs of aging, acne, sun damage, and other concerns may be interested in a little extra dermatologic help. We are pleased to offer HydraFacial treatment at our facilities in Newport News and Williamsburg, VA.
What is a HydraFacial?
HydraFacial treatment relies on a specific series of steps that cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish the skin for greater beauty and resilience. The purpose of this professional facial is to quickly improve texture, tone, and overall skin health through precise actions and customized nutrients to tackle a variety of dermatologic issues.
Who is a good candidate for Hydrafacial?
This quick procedure can address multiple concerns simultaneously. These include:
- Sun damage and age spots
- Signs of aging
- Enlarged pores
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Acne and acne scarring
Unlike some cosmetic treatments, HydraFacial has been specifically designed for all skin types. Our ability to customize each gentle treatment to the individual makes the HydraFacial ideal even for those with sensitive skin who may not respond well to other treatments, such as chemical peels or lasers.
It isn’t necessary to have an existing concern to be a good candidate for HydraFacial treatment. Adults of all ages can benefit from this non-invasive, painless treatment that infuses the skin with nutrient-rich serums at just the right moment when tissues are most ready to receive them.
How does Hydrafacial work and what happens during treatment?
The key aspect of the HydraFacial that makes this treatment so special is that it uses water as the exfoliating medium, not chemicals or thermal energy. HydraFacials are performed using a patented device that cleanses, exfoliates, and removes dead skin cells while simultaneously bathing the skin in hydrating and rejuvenating ingredients.
The HydraFacial Process Includes:
- Vortex Cleansing. To begin the facial, the provider selects the appropriate applicator wand depending on how long it has been since the skin was last exfoliated. The applicator simultaneously cleanses the skin and exfoliates the uppermost layer of tissue to eliminate dead, dull cells. As the wand moves over the skin, it also releases a vacuum-powered stream of serum containing glycolic and lactic acids, which help to dislodge oils and dirt from the pores. This step is like microdermabrasion without the mess and potential irritation of crystals.
- Vortex Acid Peel. After the skin is cleaned, the gentle vortex acid peel is performed to loosen debris from deep within the pores. This step in the treatment applies a non-irritating combination of salicylic and glycolic acids directly into the pores, reducing the risk of future breakouts.
- Vortex Extraction. In a typical facial, extractions are known to be uncomfortable. Not in the HydraFacial! The vortex extraction places zero pressure on the skin. To extract debris from the pores, the provider moves a suction-powered applicator across the skin. Because the pores have been primed during the vortex acid peel, they release oil, dirt, and other gunk easily. To ease this process, the applicator wand delivers a nourishing and soothing serum containing ingredients like spiraea ulmaria flower extract and willow bark extract while applying the gentle suction.
- Vortex Infusion. Pores cleared and skin prepped, the HydraFacial wand is then used to infuse tissue with a customized serum that may contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamins A & E, white tea extract, and more.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare before my Hydrafacial?
To achieve the best results from HydraFacial treatment, patients may be advised to avoid receiving chemical peels, laser treatment, and dermal fillers in the weeks before their session. Patients taking Accutane should alert their provider when scheduling. They may be advised to postpone this treatment until they have been off this medication for about 6 months. In the last few days leading up to the HydraFacial, it is beneficial to avoid excessive sun exposure and chemical products like salicylic acid.
