Botox & Injectables for Men

Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads is pleased to offer safe and effective aesthetic services for women and men. Steadily growing in popularity, men are seeking Botox injection therapy to reduce lines and wrinkles and restore a youthful and refreshed appearance. Injection therapy is the most common nonsurgical, FDA approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of crow’s feet around the eyes and wrinkles in the forehead area. Whether combating the signs of aging or simply seeking a refreshed look; men are gaining confidence in their appearance through injection therapies such as Botox.

What is Botox?

As we age, the repetitive movement and contractions of the muscles in the face can cause deep lines, creases or wrinkles. Advancements in nonsurgical cosmetic treatment options provide effective and safe remedies for patients who desire a fresher more youthful appearance.

Injection therapy utilizes a chemical known as a neuromodulator to temporarily weaken targeted muscles in the face. Botox essentially puts the muscles to sleep for a period of time to reduce the appearance of creases, lines and wrinkles. Nonsurgical injection therapy is most commonly used to treat the following areas of the face:

  • Frown lines (between the eyebrows)
  • Crow’s feet around the outside of the eyes
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Wrinkles in the upper nose
  • Creases around the mouth often referred to as smoker’s lines or laugh lines
  • Wrinkles in the chin

What to Expect with Botox?

Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads is pleased to discuss what to expect after injection therapy at your consultation so that we can answer all of your questions and you will feel confident about your choices. Injection therapy is a simple and quick office procedure that requires little to no downtime or recovery. Your doctor will use a thin needle to inject a small amount of therapeutic solution into the skin and muscles of the face. Most people do not experience discomfort during the procedure; however, topical numbing agents can be used to increase patient comfort. It is important to follow the after care instructions which may include avoiding rubbing the area for 24 hours after the procedure.

Patients can expect results in as little as one to three days after the procedure and the effects can last up to 4 months. To help maintain the effects of injection therapy, patients may want to make routine visits for follow-up injections.

Laser Hair Removal for Men

Many adults experience unwanted or extra hair on the body which can be difficult to groom or cause a reduced sense of self confidence. Shaving and waxing are two of the traditional methods used to eliminate unwanted hair; however, laser hair removal is an extremely effective cosmetic procedure that offers long lasting results for men.

During laser hair removal treatment, light energy generated by a state-of-the-art laser is converted to heat energy damaging the hair follicles that produce hair. The damage to the hair follicle delays or prevents the growth of hair in the future. Laser hair removal is the only effective method of thinning hair in cases where men may want it thinned out rather than completely removed. Laser hair removal can be performed on most areas of the body that have unwanted hair such as the chest, back and arms.

What to Expect with Laser Hair Removal

Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads is pleased to offer a thorough consultation prior to the treatment day to review your medical history, evaluate your hair and skin and discuss expectations of laser hair removal treatments. After an evaluation, we will be able to determine how many treatments will be required to achieve the desired effect.

During the laser hair removal treatment, your doctor will use a handheld laser instrument that contacts the surface of the skin. As the laser beams pass through the hair follicles, you may experience slight discomfort or a warm pricking sensation. Your skin may be pink and slightly swollen after the treatment which is normal. A cool compress can be used to alleviate any discomfort you have after the procedure. We will give you after care instructions to follow so that you can properly care for your skin.

At the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads, we utilize the latest medical laser technology to help you achieve optimal results. Our highly trained plastic surgeons are compassionate and create individualized treatment plans for your unique cosmetic needs. We look forward to providing expert care for removing or thinning unwanted body hair.

Breast Reduction for Men

Seventy percent of adolescents and middle-aged men suffer from gynecomastia or feminine-looking chests. This condition can occur to men at any age due to obesity, hormonal changes, genetics or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can cause both physical and emotional discomfort. Physically, it can cause back pain and poor posture. Emotionally, it can affect a man’s self-image and confidence. Male breast reduction can be performed safely and successfully on teenagers and adult men alike.

View Gynecomastia

Most men desire a chest that is broad and flat. Sometimes changes in diet and exercise can help flatten the chest but often, surgical intervention is needed to get the desired results. Gynecomastia reduction is a breast reduction surgery for men that removes excess fat and breast tissue, helping to contour a man’s chest. With a more masculine chest, men may feel more comfortable in tight-fitting clothing, going shirtless and in intimacy.

Gynecomastia is characterized by excessive glandular tissue development, excessive skin on the chest, excess localized fat on the chest and can be present in one or both breasts.

What to Expect With Gynecomastia

The Procedure

The procedure for treating gynecomastia with liposuction is typically performed using local anesthesia with sedation, or general anesthesia, and involves a small incision on each side of the chest. More severe cases of gynecomastia may require surgical tissue excision to achieve optimal results. Tissue excisions allow the surgeon to remove a greater amount of glandular tissue and skin than liposuction alone. Your surgeon will take care to place incisions so that the resulting scars are as inconspicuous as possible. Through these incisions, your surgeon will remove excess fat and glandular tissue, at the same time sculpting a new chest contour that looks natural to your body.

The Recovery

The recovery process following liposuction is typically quite tolerable. With tissue excision, it is common for patients to experience soreness and some swelling. Patients are often given a compression garment to wear for the first few weeks after surgery; this helps minimize swelling and offers support to the healing tissues.
Vigorous exercise is typically restricted for about three weeks, but many men return to work or school within several days of the procedure. However, your surgeon will give you individualized instructions for recovery.

The Results

After surgery, you should notice an immediate improvement in the shape and appearance of your chest. The results are meant to be permanent since the excess fat, glandular tissue and skin that were removed are gone for good. However, significant weight gain, steroid use or certain medical conditions could result in a recurrence of gynecomastia, so it’s crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Your surgeon will advise you on what to do to maintain your results for the long term.

Eye Lift Surgery for Men

A blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure used to remove “bags” from the lower eyelid and excess skin from the upper lid that may impact vision. Eyelid surgery can help enhance the appearance of the eyes and create a younger, more refreshed look. There are many benefits for patients choosing a blepharoplasty in addition to restoring a more refreshed appearance, such as:

  • Boost self-confidence
  • Improve visual field
  • Minimal scarring
  • Reduce the appearance of bags under the eye
  • Improve dark circles under the eye

If you have drooping upper eyelids or puffy lower eyelids, you will appear older than you are, and your friends and family may frequently ask if you are tired, upset, or sick. Eyelid surgery can return your drooping, puffy eyelids to a more youthful appearance and improve how others see you. Eyelid surgery can be used in combination with other facial procedures.

Eyelid surgery can return your drooping, puffy eyelids to a more youthful appearance and improve how others see you. Eyelid surgery can be used in combination with other facial procedures.

What to Expect with Eyelid Surgery

Cosmetic eyelid surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure that usually lasts from 45 minutes to 2 hours. Depending on the extent of your eyelid surgery, you will be given general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. During the first one or two weeks after eyelid surgery, patients commonly have some visible bruising and swelling, and their eyelids may feel unusually tight. Most patients report feeling soreness that is relieved using cold compresses and keeping the head elevated. Most return to their jobs 10-14 days after an eyelid lift.

Expect your eyes to get tired more quickly than usual for the first few weeks, and it’s important to let them rest as needed. If your job requires you constantly to be at a computer, consider resuming work part-time initially, then gradually increasing your workload as you continue to recover. You must protect your eyes from the sun and wind. Wear dark sunglasses with frames that provide plenty of coverage whenever you go outdoors.

You will have to avoid lifting, straining, and bending down to pick things up for up to 4 weeks after eyelid surgery. Although an inconvenient restriction, it is crucial that you do not induce sudden increases in blood pressure until your incisions have healed adequately.

Keeping Your Results Looking Their Best

With a healthy lifestyle and good skincare habits, cosmetic eyelid surgery results should last for years. The excess, sagging skin is gone for good. Although we can’t stop the aging process, your results will age naturally with you. Botox, dermal fillers and skin resurfacing can continue to help you touch up your youthful appearance by smoothing wrinkles around the face and eyes.

Rhinoplasty for Men

Rhinoplasty is the medical term for nose surgery which is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to enhance facial aesthetics as well as correct structural defects such as a deviated septum. Rhinoplasty can help improve breathing issues that may affect sleep like snoring.

Men most often choose rhinoplasty to help straighten the nasal bridge or reduce the appearance of a bump in the nose.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Additional benefits of rhinoplasty include:

  • Improved Symmetry – nose surgery can improve the symmetry of the nose and make it more proportional to the face. Some men may think that their nose is out of proportion to the face and subtle modifications during a rhinoplasty can help achieve a more symmetrical appearance
  • Correct Structural Defects – although a rhinoplasty can be offered for aesthetic purposes, it can also repair structural defects that may cause breathing issues such as snoring. A deviated septum is the most common structural defect that can be addressed with a rhinoplasty procedure
  • Increased Self-Confidence – making minor changes to the shape of the nose can dramatically enhance the appearance of the face

What to Expect with Rhinoplasty?

If you are looking to enhance your appearance and are considering a rhinoplasty to help you achieve optimal results, Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads is pleased to offer a consultation where we can discuss your goals and expectations. Our board certified surgeons are highly skilled and trained in delivering safe, effective and natural looking results. Each cosmetic enhancement procedure is customized for the unique needs of each patient. The techniques used will be based on what goals you are trying to achieve and which technique will help you achieve the best results.

A rhinoplasty procedure is typically an outpatient procedure that is completed under general anesthesia. You will wear a splint on your nose for a period after the procedure to help your nose heal in the proper position. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising on and around the nose. Most swelling should be resolved after 6 months. Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads looks forward to working with you to achieve your aesthetic goals.

Facelift for Men

Men, just like women, are often concerned about the signs of aging. Things like loose skin and jowls, and deep wrinkles can knock your self-confidence and make you look and feel old. Even though age-related facial changes are normal, rejuvenating your appearance with a cosmetic procedure can be very rewarding. Some issues can be solved with minimally invasive procedures like fillers and peels; however, loose skin and deep lines often require more extensive treatment like a facelift.

Facelifts and other facial rejuvenation techniques have been around for over a hundred years. Over this time procedures have become more advanced, offering more and more options to those who want to look younger and more vibrant as they age.

Benefits of a Facelift

A facelift improves visible signs of aging in the face, such as:

  • Sagging in the cheek and midface
  • Deep creases below the lower eyelids
  • Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth
  • Fat that has fallen or is displaced that may create jowls along the jaw line
  • Loss of muscle tone in the lower face that may create jowls

What to Expect During a Facelift Procedure

A facelift is designed to address common issues such as sagging skin, jowls, and poor jaw definition. The procedure requires analyzing the patients’ facial proportions and aging so to minimize future facial changes so corrections can be maintained over longer periods of time. Meticulous detail is used to beautifully sculpt your face.

The procedure begins with carefully placed incisions, typically just inside the hairline at the temple and extending down along the natural curve of the ear, behind the ear, and into the hairline. If you don’t need a full facelift, the incision will be much smaller. The surgeon will remove and reconfigure fat and tissue from under the skin reshaping the face. Once the underlying structure and support is redefined, any excess the skin is removed and the incisions are closed.

The best candidates for facelift procedures are between 40 and their late 60s. Some men choose to undergo a minor facelift when they’re younger to strengthen their facial structure and help prevent significant sagging of the skin as they age. A facelift doesn’t stop the aging process, but turns back the clock on your face and age. Once healed, the face continues to age at a normal pace. If you look ten years younger after a facelift, it will take about ten years or more for your face to age back to the preoperative condition.

Procedures Often Combined With A Facelift

Depending on the outcome you desire, a facelift may be combined with other procedures to rejuvenate the face. These procedures include:

  • Brow Lift
  • Eyelid Lift
  • Skin Resurfacing
  • Neck Lift

Non-surgical rejuvenation treatments, such as peels or fillers, cannot achieve the same results, but they may help delay the time at which a facelift becomes appropriate and complement the results of surgery.

Recovery and Results

Bandages will be applied to the face for the first 24-hours, but will soon be replaced by a lighter covering. Patients typically experience swelling and bruising during the recovery period and patients will need to keep their head elevated to promote a healthy healing process. The surgeon will follow up with you often for the first few weeks to monitor your recovery, remove stitches, clean incision sites and change bandages when necessary.

The surgeon will inform you when you can return to activities like exercise and showering. Generally, patients are able to resume normal activities after two to three weeks. Everyone heals at different rates so listen to your body and your surgeon before doing to much.

Facelifts are transformative and produce dramatic results. These results will differ for everyone but the results will be noticeable immediately and in the weeks following as swelling decreases. Final results will be visible three to six months following the procedure. A facelift is a long-lasting solution to aging symptoms, making it one of the most effective anti-aging procedures offered by plastic surgeons today!

Necklift for Men

The neck is one of the first areas to show signs of aging. Neck bands or wrinkled skin are frequent issues for men and women The good news is neck lift surgery is an effective way to help with the common issue of “turkey neck,” the sagging skin along the front of the neck or below the chin. Loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw can make even a person of normal weight appear to have a double chin.

Often paired with a facelift to address vertical neck bands, wrinkles and deep folds. Through a small incision beneath the chin, excess skin, vertical bands, and a turkey wattle can be improved and contoured by removing and sculpting excess fatty tissue.

Like facelifts, the best candidates for neck lift procedures are between 40 and their late 60s. Some men choose to undergo a minor facelift when they’re younger to strengthen their facial structure and help prevent significant sagging of the skin as they age.

Benefits of a Necklift

A neck lift can take years off your appearance by:

  • Tightening excess, sagging skin.
  • Improving the look of wrinkles and creases.
  • Minimizing the appearance of vertical bands.
  • Reducing jowls and excess volume on the neck.

Older men who opt for neck rejuvenation do so because of ‘turkey gobbler’ neck folds that not only call attention to aging, but also interfere with shaving and buttoning shirt collars. Younger men simply want a better-defined chin and cleaner neckline. Unlike women, most men opt for only a neck lift instead of a neck lift with face lift. Men tend to have specific issues with the sagging in the lower part of their face and neck.

Benefits of a Necklift

A neck lift can take years off your appearance by:

  • Tightening excess, sagging skin.
  • Improving the look of wrinkles and creases.
  • Minimizing the appearance of vertical bands.
  • Reducing jowls and excess volume on the neck.

Recovery and Results

Most men need about one week at home to rest and recover from neck lift surgery, although more complex procedures may require more time. It can take several weeks to months for swelling to fully subside. As they do, the visible improvements of a neck lift appear. Your final result should not only provide a more youthful and rested appearance, but will help you feel more confident about yourself.

Liposuction for Men

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but a body contouring procedure that targets stubborn fat deposits. It can help reshape your body’s curves and define muscular structure that has been hidden under fat deposits. By using liposuction to remove stubborn fat deposits that won’t respond to changes in diet or exercise habits, patients observe a noticeable change in physique.

Where On My Body Can I Have Liposuction?

Liposuction is used to reduce fat in almost any area of the body. Liposuction can be used to reduce excessive fat in:

  • Abdomen
  • Flanks, love handles
  • Thighs
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Neck and jowls
  • Chest

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is a permanent fat reduction procedure that provides long-lasting results. If you are in reasonably good health, with sound dietary and fitness habits, you may be a good candidate. Increasingly, male plastic surgery candidates are opting for liposuction and experiencing the benefits of a dramatically improved appearance. Liposuction is one of the top three most popular cosmetic surgery procedures among men in the United States.

By analyzing each patient’s individual needs, our surgeons are able to perform liposuction for men targeting specific problem areas of the body for fat removal.

Maintaining an athletic and muscular physique is important for many men. Fat pockets in the abdomen, love handles, back, chest and upper arms are often unresponsive to diet and exercise. With liposuction we can help precisely sculpt your body and give it a more athletic contour.

Recovery & Results

After liposuction, you can expect to feel mild discomfort, and see bruising, redness and swelling. You may be instructed to wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and promote healing. Swelling usually starts to go down by the end of the first week but wearing the compression garments should continue until otherwise directed. Some degree of swelling may last for as long as six weeks, but within a few days, you should be comfortable enough to return to work. During the procedure, small incisions are made in order to remove the excess fat cells. These incisions are made in inconspicuous areas whenever possible, so they are less noticeable.

Chances are, you probably won’t see the results you want right after your procedure. While liposuction can remove up to 10 pounds of fat cells during a procedure, but fluid retention and swelling can cause you to look bloated. As the swelling goes down, you can begin to see results. You may also notice that some of your skin is loose in the area treated with liposuction. Loose skin will usually firm up over time but your surgeon will talk with you about skin tightening as part of your body contouring procedure if warranted. Depending on how much fat is removed, you can expect to see final results between 1-3 months aft

Maintaining My Results

It’s important to keep in mind that liposuction results are not necessarily permanent. Liposuction removes a certain number of fat cells in the treatment area for good, but the remaining cells can continue to store fat and grow in size. To maintain results and continued success, you should follow a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. It’s up to you to take good care of yourself so that you can enjoy your slimmer look for a long time.

Skin Resurfacing for Men

Men are regularly having skin resurfacing procedure including microdermabrasion, laser procedures, peels and dermabrasion. An active lifestyle with exposure to sun and wind can leave skin wrinkled, discolored and aged. The right resurfacing procedure can leave the skin refreshed with improved skin tone, texture, color, pore size with fewer fine lines and wrinkles.

Resurfacing procedures can be tailored to men who have very different skin than women.Men have thicker skin with more hair follicles which allow for quicker healing allowing men to receive more aggressive resurfacing procedures with quicker healing. Part of the popularity can undoubtedly be attributed to the breadth of aesthetic concerns we can treat with minimal downtime.

Types of Skin Resurfacing Procedures

A facelift improves visible signs of aging in the face, such as:

  • Sagging in the cheek and midface
  • Deep creases below the lower eyelids
  • Deep creases along the nose extending to the corner of the mouth
  • Fat that has fallen or is displaced that may create jowls along the jaw line
  • Loss of muscle tone in the lower face that may create jowls

Chin Enhancement for Men

No man should ever feel bad about the chin they were born with, but human beings often draw all kinds of subconscious conclusions about a man’s appearance based on the shape of his chin and jaw. Further, a small or receding chin can cause other areas of the face to appear out of proportion. Because of this, chin enhancement or jaw contouring is one of the most common procedures men desire.

If you are bothered by the size of your chin, you may find yourself feeling shy or self-conscious and may often try to hide that part of your face. The team at Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads can help enhance your chin’s size and shape with chin enhancement. These procedures can improve your overall facial harmony and help you feel more confident about your appearance.

Chin enhancement may involve repositioning the chin, placing an implant over the bone of the chin, contouring the lower jaw, removing excess fat from the cheeks and neck, injecting dermal fillers to alter the proportions of the face or any combination of the above.

Types of Chin Enhancement

Chin Enhance Through Fillers

With fillers, a wider, larger, and more angular chin for a more masculine appearance can be accomplished. The shape, projection, and width of your chin depend on the underlying bone, fat, and muscle. The strategic injection of fillers is one way to change the chin’s contours. Unlike chin augmentation with implants, fillers produce quick but temporary results.

Chin Augmentation Surgery

Chin augmentation or implant surgery is an effective way to create a face that appears well-balanced. This procedure changes the shape and appearance of the chin and may even reposition it. Augmentation involves inserting a small implant through the mouth or along the jawline to create a more prominent or more defined chin. A local anesthetic with light sedation is all that’s needed to keep patients comfortable during the surgery, which typically lasts about 30 to 45 minutes.

Benefits of Chin Enhancement

  • Improvement in the shape and size of the chin
  • Correct a receding chin for a defined jawline
  • More pleasing and balanced facial appearance
  • Increased self-confidence and image
  • Improves overall facial harmony by creating better proportion
  • Enhances the definition of the neck and jawline, as well as the chin
  • Helps reduce the appearance of a full chin

Procedures Often Performed With Chin Enhancement

Since the appearance of the chin and jawline is related to the size and shape of the bones and tissues in the face and neck, chin enhancement is often done along with other procedures. The adjacent soft tissues in the face, neck, nose and lips may need enhancement as well. It is very common to combine chin enhancement with neck liposuction or with a face or neck lift. This procedure can also be combined with fat extraction to slim the face and create more angularity and definition. It is very common to perform fat removal in either the neck or midface with chin enhancement.

– Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are becoming more common for men who want to keep or restore their youthfulness. Injectibles provide an excellent option for achieving their goals. Since 1997 the number of cosmetic procedures done on men increased 325%, with the majority in the age range of 35-50 years old. Dermal fillers correct issues while providing a more natural appearance by returning the skin to its youthful state without incisions or other invasive techniques.

Your face naturally loses pockets of subcutaneous fat as you age, causing facial hollowness, sunken features, and jowls. Aging also causes collagen production to decrease, breaking down your skin’s tight structure and fullness. Dermal fillers injected directly into facial tissue reverse visible signs of aging by filling in wrinkles and replenishing facial volume loss. Our selection of dermal fillers provides a skin-rejuvenating option for all skin types and issues.

What Can Dermal Fillers Fix?

Dermal fillers can be beneficial in those with early signs of aging or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery. Although fillers cannot achieve permanent results like surgical procedures, they can provide quick, temporary results for facial aging, and ongoing treatments can be used for long-term results.

These results include:

  • Replenish facial volume loss
  • Reduce wrinkles, fine lines, and skin laxity
  • Define your jaw
  • Boosts collagen
  • Plump thin lips
  • Enhance shallow contours
  • Improve the appearance of recessed scars
  • Reconstruct contour deformities in the face
  • Decrease or remove the shadow of the lower lids

Results

How long the effects of dermal fillers will last depends on the product, the area of treatment, and the patient. Generally speaking, the denser the product is and the more deeply it is injected, the longer it will last. To maintain your results, your cosmetic surgeon can repeat treatment, adjusting the amount and techniques as necessary to ensure optimal results.

Hyaluronic acid fillers tend to be the most temporary option, and therefore are often recommended for first-time filler patients. These will typically last from 6 to 18 months. Synthetic fillers tend to last longer because they are not absorbed by the body. However, you need to be ready to commit to the results because they will be there for several years.

Ultherapy® for Men

It’s natural to see the effects of gravity during one’s 40’s and 50’s. Once strong jawlines develop fleshy jowls. Youthful necks thicken and droop with age. Facial contours that were formerly athletic-looking are now interpreted as aged and hollow. For the patient who is not ready for a facelift but want to look younger, there are a variety of procedures available. Non-surgical facelifts are an increasingly popular form of male plastic surgery. They provide patients with the double benefit of quicker healing times and tangible visual results.

One of the most popular non-invasive procedures is Ultherapy®. It uses ultrasound energy to loosen the tissues of the neck and face. They then re-tighten around the structure of the face. Ultherapy® is the only non-invasive, non-surgical skin tightening treatment approved by the FDA for lifting the skin on the neck, chin and brow. This cosmetic procedure works to lift and tighten your skin naturally using ultrasound technology. Ultherapy® works for both men and women and not only targets deeper layers of skin tissue to improve your appearance but allows us to see the layers of tissue during the treatment to ensure more precise treatment.

Am I a Candidate For Ultherapy®?

A good Ultherapy® candidate has mild to moderate skin laxity where the skin has begun to feel and look less firm such as a lowered eyebrow line, loose skin on the neck, sagging under the chin, or lines and wrinkles on your chest.

Like their female counterparts, men have a variety of surgical and cosmetic treatments available such as Ultherapy. However, every procedure is not going to be the correct one for every individual. There are several important things to take into consideration before attempting to turn back the years.

How Does Ultherapy® Work?

Ultherapy® works by bypassing the surface of the skin and delivering ultrasound energy to the treatment area. This stimulates collagen production in the foundations of your skin. Ultherapy® is often used to:

  • Firm the brow, chin, neck, and chest
  • Reduce lines and wrinkles
  • Lift skin on the neck and eyebrows, and under the chin

Ultherapy® uses ultrasound imaging to see deep within your skin to determine the best placement of ultrasound energy. The ultrasound energy is then delivered beneath the surface of your skin.
