As many mothers know, being a mom can be incredibly rewarding. Even pregnancy has its magical moments, though the toll it takes on your body can be unwelcome.
As your body begins to accommodate a growing baby and prepare for breastfeeding, you’ll likely notice a few obvious changes:
- Your breasts will temporarily increase in size and weight
- Your lower abdomen will expand
- You will begin storing fat in different areas
- Your skin will change and you may be more susceptible to blemishes
While many of these changes are temporary, the impact they have on your body can be permanent. For mothers who feel self-conscious about their post-pregnancy bodies, a mommy makeover may be able to help.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
The term “mommy makeover” refers to a customized set of procedures designed to address your individual breast and body concerns after pregnancy and childbirth. While each mother (and mommy makeover procedure) is unique, many women want to address the appearance of sagging breasts, lost breast volume, loose skin and excess fat on the abdomen (pregnancy pouch), and pockets of diet- and exercise-resistant fat.
A mommy makeover can cover any concerns from head to toe, including skin issues, though many mothers benefit from three main procedures.
Breast Lift and/or Breast Augmentation
To accommodate milk production, many women experience an increase in breast size. While your breasts should return to their normal size after breastfeeding, the impact of the extra volume can affect the integrity of your breast skin. This often results in loose, excess skin and a droopy or “deflated” appearance.
A mastopexy, commonly known as breast lift surgery, can effectively reduce excess skin and lift the breast to a perkier, more youthful position. Your surgeon may also reposition or resize your nipple and areola to improve proportion to the rest of the breast.
If you have experienced volume loss in the breast or simply would like to enhance your natural size, a breast lift alone will not add fullness. In this case, we may recommend a breast lift with augmentation. In addition to removing excess skin and tightening remaining skin, your surgeon will place a breast implant to restore fullness and improve the shape of the breast.
Tummy Tuck Surgery
After pregnancy, you may be dismayed with the appearance of your lower abdomen. In many cases, there is a stubborn deposit of fat and the presence of loose, hanging skin. But these aren’t the only issues that may arise after pregnancy—some mothers experience pain or weakness in the abdomen because the vertical muscles of the abdominal wall have separated.
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, both removes excess skin and tightens remaining skin, in addition to repairing and tightening the underlying abdominal muscles. This results in a smoother tummy and reduces any associated pain.
Some mothers may also find that getting rid of excess pockets of fat is particularly hard after pregnancy, even when the baby weight has been lost. This is because fat cells, once gained, never go away naturally—they just grow or shrink in size. In women, these fat cells often end up in the abdomen, hips, and thighs, and they are often difficult to get rid of with only diet and exercise.
Liposuction can surgically and permanently remove this fat to sculpt a slimmer body contour. This option is ideal either in conjunction with a tummy tuck or for patients who have mimimal skin laxity and are not concerned with excess skin.
What Are the Benefits of the Mommy Makeover?
If you ask women who have had a Mommy Makeover, you will quickly learn that this surgery is one of the best things you can do for yourself. A Mommy Makeover addresses the unique concerns that relate to pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood in general. The process reshapes the body in ways that diet and exercise cannot always do. This results in a renewed sense of satisfaction, youthfulness, vibrancy, and confidence. The changes achieved with a Mommy Makeover often encourage women to maintain a healthier lifestyle, which provides even more benefits than what can be seen physically.

How Is My Mommy Makeover Customized for my Needs?
Every Mommy Makeover looks a little different. Not every woman has her breasts augmented during this procedure, nor doe every Mommy Makeover include abdominoplasty. There are a variety of concerns that may arise as a result of motherhood, and each can be addressed in a particular way. Your plastic surgeon will meet with you to engage in thoughtful discussion about your concerns and your desired outcome. Your Makeover is then developed around those needs. Don’t assume that your Mommy Makeover has to include or be limited to liposuction, abdominoplasty, and breast augmentation. There are many other ways to give you back your best body.

How Long Will a Mommy Makeover Take?
The length of your Mommy Makeover will depend on which surgical techniques you will have. The process can take from about 3 hours to more than 6 hours. Regardless, Mommy Makeover treatment is an outpatient surgery. After your anesthesia begins to wear off, a loved one will see you home or to a nearby post-surgical care center for the night.
How Should I Prepare for a Mommy Makeover?
We provide our patients with detailed pre- and post-operative instructions to help make their body makeover as pleasant and smooth as possible. Before surgery, patients should:
- Stop smoking. Most doctors recommend avoiding tobacco at least one week before surgery. The longer you can go without smoking before and after a Mommy Makeover, the better your body will heal from its various procedures.
- Avoid alcohol. Drinking thins the blood so should be avoided in the week before surgery.
- Avoid all blood-thinning medications and supplements, including aspirin and vitamin E.
- If you take prescription medications, adjustments may need to be made before your cosmetic surgery.
- Eat a healthy diet and stay hydrated. Fresh, nutrient-rich foods provide tissues with the energy they will need to heal well and quickly.
Can I Have A Mommy Makeover if I Recently Gave Birth? How Long Should I Wait?
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends that women wait at least six months after giving birth to their last child to have a Mommy Makeover. This allows sufficient time for weight to decrease naturally with breastfeeding and healthy lifestyle habits. It also allows hormones to return to their normal levels. Some women develop Type II diabetes during or after pregnancy. It is necessary to have this condition well under control before undergoing surgery. Finally, if you choose to breastfeed, it is wise to wait until you have stopped to have your Mommy Makeover so your surgeon can address changes to breast shape.
Is a Mommy Makeover Safe?
Mommy Makeover procedures are safe and effective. Studies have indicated that combining cosmetic surgery procedures does not increase risks and may actually lower them due to the single-use of general anesthesia. The risk of severe complications associated with combination plastic surgery techniques is low.
When can I Return to Normal Activities after a Mommy Makeover?
Most Mommy Makeover patients can begin to resume normal activities in two to three weeks after surgery. These include light activities like working a desk job, walking, and doing light housework. More strenuous activities including heavy lifting and exercise that raises the heart rate significantly may begin sometime between 4- and 6-weeks post-op.
Will I Have any Scarring After a Mommy Makeover?
Patients can expect some scarring to be seen after their Mommy Makeover. The extent of scarring depends on the procedures that are performed. Liposuction has the smallest scars, measuring 1 cm or less. Abdominoplasty incurs a scar that runs from one hipbone to the other. Breast procedures may be performed through different incision patterns. This is discussed during the consultation for your Mommy Makeover. Once incisions have fully healed, scars can be treated with creams, silicone sheets, or other reduction methods.
Are There Any Risks to a Mommy Makeover?
Surgical procedures carry risks of infection, bleeding, scarring, and poor wound healing. The cosmetic results of surgery may be asymmetrical or otherwise poor. These risks can be minimized by choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to perform their Mommy Makeover and by closely following all pre- and post-operative instructions.
