Microneedling is a favorite at PSCHR, helping patients improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, sun damage and other signs of aging, and achieve fantastic results in just a few treatments with little to no downtime.

skinpen-microneedling We use the SkinPen®, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device on the market and one that is renowned for its efficacy, reliability, and safety. After all, our patients deserve the very best!

What is SkinPen® good for treating?

Nearly any surface-level or texture-related concern can be improved with microneedling. We can also use SkinPen® nearly anywhere on the face or body, including the hands, chest, and back. In particular, we find SkinPen useful for treating:

  • Fine lines & wrinkles
  • Mild skin laxity (i.e., “crepey” skin around the eyelids)
  • Scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Rough texture
  • Acne
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Large pore size

How does SkinPen® microneedling work?

Microneedling works by creating a series of microscopic channels in the skin with superfine needles. Your body responds to the action of these needles as though the skin is injured, and sets the healing process in motion. Many great things happen as a result:

  • your skin cells are flooded with growth factors and nutrients
  • collagen production increases
  • old, damaged skin cells are rapidly replaced with new, undamaged cells
  • new blood vessels develop, improving blood and nutrient supply to your renewed complexion

Over the course of a few weeks, you’ll notice blemishes and fine lines fade as skin becomes smoother, firmer, and more youthful in texture and appearance.

Does microneedling hurt?

Most patients do not find microneedling painful. We will apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment, which removes much of any “prickling” sensation from the needles. Additionally, SkinPen® is designed to move smoothly over the face, and the needles make very shallow indentions in the skin.

Is SkinPen® microneedling safe for dark skin?

Yes! SkinPen microneedling is safe and effective for very light to very dark skin. Because SkinPen® utilizes your body’s natural healing response, you don’t have to worry about the risk of pigmentation loss or discoloration associated with some lasers and chemical peels.

The only time you shouldn’t do microneedling is if you have active skin irritation or infection, you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or you are currently taking Accutane or a similar isotretinoin drug.

How many treatments will I need?

Typically, we recommend a series of 3 treatments, performed at one-month intervals, to get started. This is a sufficient number of treatments for most patients to achieve their desired results for mild to moderate skin concerns. If your concerns are more advanced, you can come in for additional treatments.

Is there any downtime?

Microneedling does not require any real downtime. Initially, your skin will look a little sunburned and may feel slightly irritated or sensitive. This lasts just a couple of days.

You can return to normal activities, although we ask that you refrain from strenuous activity for 24 hours to avoid overheating the skin. Additionally, you will need to protect treated skin with broad-spectrum SPF and/or clothing for several days, until the healing process is complete.

How long does it take to see results from microneedling?

Improvements are usually noticeable within 2 to 3 weeks after each microneedling treatment. Your results will continue to improve over several months as your skin produces new collagen and skin cells turn over.

You can get the most out of each treatment and prolong your results with a high-quality, at-home skincare regime, including daily moisturizer and sunscreen. Our skincare team can help you select products best suited to your skin type and needs.
