With Cellfina®, smoother, firmer skin is possible after just one treatment, with results that last!
A healthy lifestyle, diet, and exercise can keep our bodies svelte and skin glowing. But cellulite is the worst! This irregular, lumpy skin appearance affects most of us sooner or later, but since it’s structural—not a matter of too much fat—cellulite is notoriously difficult to treat. Until now.
We’re excited to offer Cellfina, the first and only treatment FDA cleared to reduce cellulite for at least 3 years, at Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads. Unlike creams, massage, or even most lasers, Cellfina treats the cause of cellulite, not just the appearance, for long-lasting results in as little as one treatment—you’ll be ready to sport smoother, firmer shorts-ready skin within days.
What is the Cellfina System?
Cellulite is a condition that many women dread. Most women over the age of 20 can expect to develop some degree of cellulite in their lifetime. This is characterized by dimpling of the skin, but it isn’t a skin condition, necessarily. What causes cellulite is the connection of the skin to fibrous bands beneath the epidermis. These bands create compartments of fat cells and lymph. Consequently, if these cells and fluid take up more space than is available in each compartment, small areas of protrusion occur. This creates what is known as the “cottage cheese” appearance.
The Cellfina® system is the first FDA-cleared technology developed for the reduction of cellulite. The device was cleared in 2015 and has since been achieving outstanding results for women across the country. Its approach is minimally-invasive, convenient, and safe.
How does Cellfina work?
Cellfina is a minimally-invasive procedure that reduces the lumpy, puckered areas of skin (a.k.a. cellulite) by releasing tough, fibrous connective tissue cords called septae. These cords are normal and connect our skin to the tissues below. Inconveniently, however, septae tend to tighten in certain areas of the body, such as the thighs and buttocks, pulling down on the skin and causing the puckered, lumpy “cottage cheesy” appearance of cellulite.
Cellfina is a unique system that inserts a tiny blade just a few millimeters beneath the skin to mechanically release these cords. This process allows the skin to “bounce back” to a normal level, helping the treated area become smoother and firmer. Cellfina’s specially-designed vacuum device allows for quick, effective treatment without surgery or scars, and without damaging surrounding tissues.
Is Cellfina a surgical procedure?
No. Cellfina is not surgery, it is a minimally-invasive procedure that is done without anesthesia or surgical instruments. To reduce the appearance of cellulite, Cellfina relies on a small needle-like device to release the fibrous bands that are pulling on the skin.
The process begins with a local numbing anesthetic, then the following steps:
- A very small, needle-sized device applies quick, soft pressure onto the connective bands that pull on the skin.
- The device also applies suction to gently secure the skin so a small blade can be inserted to cut the bands that lie beneath.
- When released from the fibrous bands, the fat layer is allowed to spread and smooth, reducing the appearance of cellulite.
- The process is completed in 45 to 90 minutes.

What to expect with Cellfina in Hampton Roads
At Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads, your Cellfina treatment is performed by one of our experienced, board-certified plastic surgeons. After reviewing your goals, your surgeon will mark and then apply a local anesthetic to the treatment areas.
Your surgeon will then place the Cellfina device onto your skin. The device uses a vacuum-assisted mechanism to gently pull the skin upwards, allowing the tiny blade to go under the skin’s surface and release the septae. The whole process typically takes only 45 to 60 minutes to complete.
Following treatment, you can expect some mild soreness and/or bruising for a few days. Most patients resume normal activities right away, but avoid strenuous exercise for 2 to 3 days (enjoy some well-deserved R&R!). Best of all, you should notice positive improvements in as few as 3 days after your Cellfina procedure.
When will I see improvements after Cellfina’s treatment?
Patients may begin to see an improvement in the smoothness of their skin in as few as three days. According to studies, the effects of Cellfina treatment may improve form several months. This is indicated by patients’ satisfaction sitting at 85 percent at three months and at 94 percent at 12 months. At two years, patient satisfaction is estimated to be 96 percent, and still over 90 percent at three years.
How many treatments of Cellfina do I need for visible results?
Cellfina has been designed as a one-time treatment to significantly reduce the appearance of cellulite in areas including the thighs and buttocks.
Cellfina Treatment Before and After
Will I need to take time off?
Patients need not schedule much time off for their Cellfina treatment. Because minor tenderness and soreness may occur, it can be beneficial to arrange treatment before the weekend. By the following Monday, comfort should be restored enough to return to work.
What is the recovery like for Cellfina?
People who get Cellfina treatment may be advised to wear compression garments for a few days. This helps to restructure fatty tissue beneath the skin so results are optimally uniform. Exercise should be avoided for about 4 days, including swimming. Finally, patients should avoid direct sun exposure to the treatment area for one week after Cellfina. Treatment.
Is Cellfina painful?
No. We administer a local anesthetic to the skin prior to beginning this procedure. Patients do not experience any pain during their procedure and can safely drive immediately after their treatment.
Are there any side effects with Cellfina?
Minor side effects may occur after Cellfina. These include minor soreness and tenderness. Some patients notice bruising. These side effects resolve gradually over a few days.
How much does the Cellfina treatment cost?
The cost of Cellfina treatment is determined by the treatment area and the number of cellulite dimples there is to remove. We provide patients with a cost breakdown during their consultation.
