Do you look angry or tired, even when you're content and well-rested? As men age, excess, baggy skin collects around the eyelids and fat deposits show up below the eyes, leading to a fatigued or concerned appearance. By removing excess skin and lifting and tightening remaining skin, an eyelid lift can restore a sharp, well-rested appearance to the upper face.

What Can an Eyelid Lift Correct?

Men who have excessive sagging or wrinkled upper or lower eyelid skin could benefit from a blepharoplasty procedure. Common concerns that can be addressed with an eyelid lift include:

  • Excess upper eyelid skin that impairs vision
  • Loss of natural eyelid crease
  • Puffy deposits of fat under the eyes ("eye bags")
  • Drooping skin at the corners of the eyelids that create a tired appearance

Many men have regained an alert appearance to the eyes and increased confidence with eyelid lift surgery in Hampton Roads. It's important, however, to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine if this is the right procedure for you. You may find that a brow lift or facelift in place of or addition to an eyelid lift may better help you meet your goals.

What to Expect from Eyelid Lift Surgery

Your eyelid procedure will be performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Depending on your concerns and desired results, either an upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or combination of both may be required.

Upper Blepharoplasty

To address sagging skin and creases of the upper eyelid, your surgeon will begin by placing an incision in the natural crease of the eye, where it is easily hidden. Through this incision, extra skin and fat will be gently and precisely removed. The natural structure and anatomy of your eye will be carefully considered, and your results will be natural and subtle but with marked improvement. The area will be carefully sutured and dressed once the desired results have been achieved.

Lower Blepharoplasty

A lower eyelid lift will reduce the appearance of puffiness and drooping below the eye. An incision is made just inside of your lower eyelash line, giving your surgeon access to any extra fat and skin that has accumulated in the area. Once these have been removed and a tighter, more youthful appearance has been achieved, your incisions will be closed.

Your recovery should be relatively comfortable, as the skin around the eye heals quickly and the dissolving sutures promote smooth healing. If you experience any discomfort, oral pain medication can be prescribed to help you manage it. You will experience some swelling and bruising during the initial recovery, but this should resolve quickly and the application of a cold compress can help expedite the process. Most patients return to normal, non-strenuous activity within a few days and can go back to work within a week.
