Did you know that liposuction is the top cosmetic surgery for both men and women in the United States, with almost 350,000 procedures performed in 2014 alone? It’s no surprise that liposuction is popular—it’s the most effective surgical fat reduction method currently available!

For men, excess fat tends to accumulate largely in the abdomen and flanks, and it is often resistant to a healthy diet and regular exercise routine. This is because fat cells are not naturally eliminated when weight is lost, they simply shrink or expand with weight fluctuation. Liposuction physically removes these fat cells, providing dramatic improvement.

What to Expect from Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia to ensure safety and comfort. Our board certified plastic surgeons use the tumescent liposuction technique, which involves infusing the treatment areas with a solution made of saline and anesthetic to define the area and allow for surgical precision. This method has also been shown to minimize swelling and bleeding.

Depending on your personal needs, we may perform Vaser liposuction. This method utilizes a small, specially designed probe that emits ultrasonic waves to break up areas of fat for easier removal. This allows for specific targeting of problem areas and leaves surrounding tissues, muscles, and skin unharmed.

To begin, your surgeon will place small, inconspicuous incisions in the treatment area. Through these, a small suctioning device (called a cannula) will be used to remove fat deposits and sculpt a slimmer, more masculine contour. Once the desired results have been achieved, your incisions will be sutured and dressed.

You will be able to return home the same day, though you will need to wear a special compression garment over the treated areas. We often recommend compression for around a month to help reduce swelling and maintain a smooth result. Once any residual soreness has decreased, lycra or spandex may be more comfortable than the compression garment.

Normal activities can typically be resumed quickly, and your level of activity will depend on your personal comfort level. Bruising and swelling will occur, though should resolve within a few weeks.

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

If you are concerned with excess fat on the stomach, hips, waist, thighs, buttocks, arms, legs, or under the chin, liposuction may be a good choice for you. If you are hoping to reduce excess fat or glandular tissue on your chest, we also offer male breast reduction surgery, which may involve a combination of liposuction and surgical excision.

To be eligible for liposuction, you should meet the following criteria:

  • Be at or near a stable, healthy body weight
  • Have general good health
  • Be a non-smoker or willing to quit in the weeks before and after your procedure
  • Have deposits of persistent fat

Liposuction can provide long-lasting improvement to your body contour if you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regime.
