BREAST REDUCTION

Achieve the look that makes you feel beautiful.

When many women think of getting plastic surgery on their breasts, it is for the purposes of enlarging, reshaping, or lifting their breasts. However, wanting to reduce the size of your breasts is equally valid and can have a significant positive impact on your health, self-esteem and daily life. At Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads, our amazing team of compassionate, board certified plastic surgeons in Newport News and Williamsburg, Virginia are here to help you achieve the look that makes you feel beautiful.

WHY GET A BREAST REDUCTION?

Overly large breasts can be a nuisance for many women. Finding bras and clothing that fit flatteringly can be a chore, and the styles that other women enjoy may be difficult to achieve with a larger chest. Physical activity like swimming, running or exercising is doubly strenuous when even bathing suits, sports bras or compression sportswear cannot keep your chest secure. However, large breasts can often cause more than just inconvenience; they can also be quite painful.

While many women choose to get a breast reduction surgery simply to increase their self-confidence and sense of attractiveness, many women also find that large breasts interfere with their normal daily activities and cause them head, neck or back pain.

Candidates for breast reduction include those who have large breasts that cause:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Back, shoulder, neck or head pain
  • Poor posture
  • Difficulty performing physical activities
  • Painful bra strap indentations
  • Chafing under the breasts
  • Difficulty finding clothes that fit
  • Low self-confidence

HOW BREAST REDUCTIONS WORK

Our breast reduction surgeries in Williamsburg and Newport News, VA, are designed to provide you with a more attractive contour and smaller breast size with the goal of freeing you from any health problems associated with overly large breasts.

Breast reduction surgery can usually be performed on an outpatient basis while under general anesthesia. In this procedure, your surgeon will place small, precise incisions around the pigmented area around your nipple, known as the areola. These incisions extend vertically below the nipple and in the fold under the breast.

Your surgeon will then use these small incisions to remove excess breast tissue, fat and skin to reduce the size and weight of the breast. The nipple-areolar complex is also moved upward to a position that complements your smaller breast size. With the process complete, your surgeon will close the incisions and cover them with light dressings.

After your surgery, you’ll be given a specialized support bra that is designed to hold your breasts in a symmetrical position, promote proper healing and maintain your beautiful results. It’s normal to experience some tenderness, swelling and/or bruising in the days following your surgery. Pain medication may be prescribed to help manage discomfort, and we will provide you with any other post-operative care instructions so you can stay on top of your recovery at home.

Most patients can return to light activity and work within 7-10 days after surgery. However, heavy physical activity such as exercise should be avoided for several weeks until the healing process progresses. Scarring is also normal and will usually fade within 6-12 months with proper care.
