Whether your lips are naturally thin or you’ve noticed a few changes in their shape with aging, there are a variety of options for improving lip shape and adding volume. But if you’re looking for a permanent solution, it may be time to consider permanent lip enlargement.
Who is a Candidate for Lip Enhancement?
You may be a candidate for permanent lip enlargement if:
- You have a desire for larger lips
- You would like to improve the shape of your lips
- Your lips have lost fullness over time
- You are a healthy non-smoker
The intended result is to create permanently or semi-permanently larger lips without the need for repetitive procedures, as would be needed with collagen injections or fat transfer (fat grafts).
Lip Enhancement Surgery Overview
A piece of tissue is borrowed from the scalp and grafted into one or both lips. Fascia (the covering of a muscle) or dermis (bottom layer of skin) are both excellent sources of tissue. One of our board-certified plastic surgeons will discuss the alternatives and assist in choosing the best source for you during your personalized consultation.
Although the procedure can be done with local anesthesia only, the use of sedation plus local or general anesthesia will make the operation much easier to tolerate. A short incision is made in the comer of each lip. A tunnel is created under the mucosa, and the graft is pulled through and anchored at each end.
The lips are noticeably swollen for 7 to 10 days. Lip sensation is usually normal after healing.
How Much Does Lip Enhancement Cost?
This procedure is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment. Our patient counselors can help you with your financial arrangements, including financing. The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation.
