Do you have FOMO watching your friends plan their upcoming summer vacations? Or wishing you could post photos of yourself having a great time somewhere special on Instagram? Just because you’re out of PTO doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your summer to the fullest! There are plenty of exciting things to do in the Hampton Roads area without the hassle of planning time off and travel expenses.

Here’s how to plan a staycation that will be anything but boring.

Play tourist in your own town

When’s the last time you played tourist and visited local historical sites? Put on your red, white & blue and enjoy some of our rich colonial past—the timing’s perfect given 4th of July will be here before we know it. This area is home to classic spots including the American Revolution Museum, Jamestown Settlement, and Colonial Williamsburg. From hands-on summer classes to learning the trades of the colonial Americans, all of these sites are worth a visit this summer.

After you’ve taken in the sights and sounds of the American Revolution, you might be a little hungry. Lucky for us, we’ve got plenty of tasty local fare in Hampton Roads and Williamsburg. In fact, the Travel Channel recently featured seven local eateries worth visiting—one where your servers wear colonial costumes and powdered wigs is sure to result in a great selfie or two.

If history isn’t your thing, you can always head over to Busch Gardens. People travel from all over to scream their heads off as they plummet down some of the countries fastest roller coasters. (Hint: if you’ve got a GoPro cam, be sure to bring it along to capture the thrills.) Plus, if it’s a hot day, Busch Gardens is home to Virginia’s largest water park.

Get outside under the stars

One of the best ways to take in the serene outdoors of coastal Virginia is camping, and there are plenty of local state parks to choose from. Our favorite? First Landing State Park. This campground has cabins, tent camping options, and is accessible for most anyone. Reserve your cabin or campsite, and bring along a cooler full of your favorite chilled beverages, grillable foods, s’more supplies, and sunscreen for what will be a weekend to remember.

Head to the coast

Hampton Roads is lucky to be right by the ocean. In less than an hour, you have an endless choices of coastal offerings from Virginia Beach to Norfolk.

For starters, animal lovers have it made here. The easiest way to get your fix of aquatic life is to head to the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center in the heart of Virginia Beach. For those who want to see the animals in their natural habitat, you can always schedule a dolphin watching tour. And of course, if you just want a relaxing day at the beach, Virginia Beach is a great place to simply get seaside.

Now, go enjoy your staycation! And if we didn’t convince you that this area has plenty to offer, don’t fret—you’ll likely find something else you’ll want to do on this list by local Mike Gruss.

Don’t forget your sunscreen—and get an upgrade if greasy store brands make you reluctant to apply SPF

Whatever summer adventures you plan, be sure you have adequate sunscreen. If you’re dreading applying greasy white cream all over yourself, stop in to chat with one of our Hampton Roads skincare experts; they’ll let you test our high quality and effective medical-grade SPF options and see what feels best on your skin.

We have oodles of options that are suitable for any skin type and activity. All of our sunscreens are broad spectrum—they protect against UVA and UVB rays—so you know your skin is optimally protected against sun damage and premature aging. Most also provide your skin with a healthy dose of antioxidants to help repair preexisting skin damage. Best of all, they get the job done without feeling heavy, sticky or shiny (or making you smell like a coconut), so your makeup will go on as easily as ever before.

We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised how silky and sophisticated a good sunscreen can be!
