4 Hampton Roads Charities We Love to Support (And Think You Should Too!)

Did you knowing that giving back is not only a great way to help support your community, it also has proven health benefits for you? Here at PSCHR, we try to making giving part of our day-to-day lives—and we’re proud to support a number of amazing organizations right here in Hampton Roads.

In the past, we’ve highlighted a few ways you hang up your Scrooge hat and give back around the holidays, and this time we want to share a few Hampton Roads charities close to our hearts who could use your support all year long.

Got CUREage? Support one of PSCHR’s own in her fight against blood cancer

Got CUREage is a local charity founded by Lauren Blanchard, a self-proclaimed “blood cancer warrior” and the Virginia Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Woman of the Year 2017. Since her diagnosis of a rare blood cancer in 2009, Lauren has dedicated her life to fighting for others like her in the hopes of finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers.

In addition to accepting direct donations and selling products to help support blood cancer research, Got CUREage hosts an annual Must Dash for a CURE 5k charity race, with proceeds benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The next fun run/walk will be held on May 11, 2019, and we encourage you to take part—you’ll have a great time as you help support this worthy cause.

Join the fight for a cancer-free world with American Cancer Society, Hampton Roads

Our local chapter of the American Cancer Society is hard at work every day raising funds and awareness for cancer research and support of those fighting cancer—and it has been an honor to support them in the past by sponsoring their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

You too can help by joining local fundraising walks and initiatives, committing to donate whatever you can, or volunteering for one of their many initiatives.

Help give kids Dreams of Hope

Newport News-based charity Dreams of Hope helps promote literacy and education through family togetherness to support at-risk families and those with mental disabilities. When you donate your time, money, or goods to Dreams of Hope, you are helping them provide transportation, medication management, clothing, mentorship, and more to children and families.

This year, we were honored to partner with Dreams of Hope for a school supply drive, helping ensure students have access to what they need to excel. In addition to drives like this, you can support Dreams of Hope through direct donations or sponsoring their scholarships and other initiatives through their online store.

Join us in bringing awareness to women’s heart health

While it’s not a Hampton Roads-based charity, we are big supporters of the American Heart Association and the important work they do. Over the years, our surgeons and staff participated in fundraising and awareness campaigns on their behalf. This year, we supported Women’s Heart Health Month through giveaways and direct donations made to the AHA on behalf of participants.

There are many ways you can support the AHA, whether you sign up for monthly donations or volunteer your time to form or join a heart walk, organize fundraisers at your school, or share life-saving information from the AHA on your social media.

Now, go out and make a difference!
