Neck Lift for Men
Your neck may not be the first to come to mind when you consider what makes a man attractive, but an aging neck can detract from the overall appearance of your upper body. Sagging skin, excess fat, and loose musculature can all minimize definition and transition between the face and neck, leading to a drooping appearance and the dreaded “turkey neck.”
By removing excess fat deposits and tightening loose muscles and skin, neck lift surgery can redefine your jawline and restore a masculine, younger-looking appearance to your face and neck.
Am I a Candidate for Neck Lift Surgery?
Your neck contour and the way your skin ages can be impacted by a number of factors, including genetics, your natural anatomy, lifestyle habits, and weight fluctuation. Loss of collagen and elastin as we age inevitably loosens the skin and gravity comes into play, leading to sagging and loss of definition. While a neck lift can improve these issues for most patients, it’s important to speak with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine if this procedure is the right fit for you.
You may benefit from a neck lift if you want to:
- Reduce excess, sagging skin on the neck
- Minimize a double chin
- Eliminate jowls around the jawline
- Smooth out deep neck creases
- Reduce visibility of platysmal bands (vertical muscles running up neck)
Ideal candidates should be nonsmokers who are in general good health who do not have any conditions that increase the risk of surgical complication.
What to Expect from Neck Lift Surgery
Your neck lift procedure will be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia. Depending on your needs and the natural contour of your neck, your surgeon may place an incision under the chin in the natural fold, behind the ears, or both. Resultant scarring will be minimally visible. Through these incisions, localized fatty deposits will be reduced with liposuction techniques or through excision. Sagging, excess skin will be removed and remaining skin and underlying muscles will be tightened if necessary.
Your chin and neck will be wrapped in either dressings or an elastic neck sling for the initial healing period. To control any initial discomfort, your surgeon will prescribe oral medication and surgical aftercare information. You will have slight swelling and bruising in the area, but this should dissipate within the first two weeks. While you will see improvement almost immediately, expect to wait three to four months to see the full benefit of your surgery.
Many male patients benefit from having a combined facelift and neck lift for more dramatic improvement, or including chin augmentation to further refine the jawline and improve proportion. Talk with your surgeon about your options to determine what surgical plan will provide you with the best results.
