Change is in the air, and we’re not just talking about the weather. As the days become longer and the temperatures begin to rise, it’s important to change up your skincare routine too. Rocking the perfect summer glow can be difficult since winter can leave our skin feeling dry, itchy, and in need of some love. Luckily, Vogue magazine recently highlighted some great skin care tips for transitioning from winter to warmer weather.

1. Lighten up

Skin needs extra attention in the winter months, but spring and summer allow us to lighten up a bit. No more heavy balms, serums, or oils; instead, choose a lighter moisturizer. You may also not need to reapply as often: while it’s important to keep both dry and more oily skin well moisturized all year, the higher humidity of summer helps lock in moisture.

2. Wear protection

As the days get longer, your skin gets more sun exposure—and more sun means you need the right sunscreen. Of course you should be wearing SPF year-round, but now is a good time to make sure you have sunscreen you love (that way you’ll be sure to use it). You may also want to swap yours out for one with a higher SPF for summer’s longer days and outdoor activities. Sun damage is a huge factor in aging skin, and skin cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers—so do yourself a favor and wear a strong sunscreen separate from your lotion and makeup.

3. Keep your complexion bright

While you traditionally exfoliate more in the winter months, it’s important to keep the skin free of dead skin and clogged pores all year long. Exfoliate at least twice a week during the spring and summer months using a very gentle exfoliating cleanser.

4. Do some spring cleaning

While you’re cleaning out closets and putting away the winter coats, you should also go through your makeup and skincare items. Toss out any product that is six months or older, as expired cosmetics and skincare products can host a buildup of bacteria. You’ll love having a less cluttered bathroom, and you won’t be risking frequent breakouts.

5. Talk to a professional

Everyone’s skin has unique qualities that will respond best to certain products and practices—one gal’s dream product can be a nightmare for someone with a different skin type. The best way to understand your skincare needs through the seasons is to talk with a skin care professional; they will have seen many skin types and be able to point you in the right direction as far as treatments and products. It may seem as though this would be more expensive than figuring things out on your own, but if you find a reputable physician’s office that offers free consults, you’re likely to save money by only buying what you really need and what works. Plus your skin will look better!
