About Dr. Alexander McArthur
Alexander McArthur, III, MD, served as one of the senior partners at the Plastic Surgery Center of Hampton Roads for more than 30 years. Dr. McArthur retired from practice in June 2016.
We are grateful for Dr. McArthur’s service. Williamsburg, Newport News and Hampton Roads all have residents who benefited from his surgical skill and kind manner.
Education & Experience
Dr. McArthur received his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, earning the John Gibbon Award for best surgical student in the medical school. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Connecticut-Hartford Hospital. He was then selected by Duke University for their prestigious plastic surgery residency program. Dr. McArthur then went to Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky, for a hand surgery fellowship.
Dr. McArthur was board certified in both plastic and reconstructive surgery and general surgery and received the certificate of added qualification in surgery of the hand from the American Board of Medical Specialties.
Throughout his career, Dr. McArthur remained active in many professional organizations, including service as president of the Newport News Medical Society and Chief of Surgical Staff at Riverside Regional Medical Center. Memberships included the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, and American Medical Association.
Awards & Personal Life
Dr. McArthur was named a Top Doc 2013 in Hampton Roads Magazine’s “Best of the 757.” He also was recognized as a Top Doc for many years by Coastal Virginia Magazine.
Dr. McArthur and his wife Barbara have three children. His son and two daughters are all graduates of the University of Virginia. The family enjoys many activities together, including supporting the UVA football team, scuba diving, boating, and biking.
